The DNA of a successful actor
Max von Sydow was an actor known both in his native Sweden and internationally. Born on April 10, 1929 in Lund, southern Sweden, he first appeared worldwide when he appeared in eleven films directed by the legendary Swedish director Ingmar Bergman. His international breakthrough came in 1973 with the film "The Exorcist," in which he played the role of Jesuit priest Father Lankester Merrin.
During his career spanning nearly seven decades, Max von Sydow also worked frequently in Hollywood, acting in a variety of genres, from horror to drama to science fiction. He appeared in films such as "The Seventh Seal," "Three Days of the Condor," "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" and "Minority Report" and received numerous awards and nominations for his work.
But who was this extraordinary actor really? Max von Sydow was born Carl Adolf von Sydow, the son of ethnologist and professor of Irish folklore, Baron Carl Wilhelm von Sydow and his wife Greta, née Rappe. He grew up in a middle-class family where education and culture were important.
Von Sydow was descended from an established Swedish noble family and held the title of baron, which he did not use due to his progressive and democratic views. Through his father, he is related to a number of noble families in Sweden and beyond.
At the age of 21, he began his training at the prestigious Royal Dramatic School in Stockholm and soon enjoyed success on the stage. In 1955, he appeared for the first time in a film directed by Ingmar Bergman, "The Smile of a Summer Night," and began a creative partnership that lasted until the 1980s.
Despite his great success in Sweden and later in Hollywood, von Sydow maintained a modesty and reserve rare in the film industry. He was married twice and had four children. His second wife, Catherine Brelet, is a French documentary filmmaker. Von Sydow died on March 8, 2020, at the age of 90.
Max von Sydow leaves a rich legacy in the world of theater and cinema. Regardless of his impressive career and aristocratic pedigree, he will be remembered first and foremost as a profound, talented and versatile actor who was intensely passionate about each of his roles.
Max von Sydow belonged to the haplogroup R-M417 (subgroup R-P269) in the paternal line.
